Why pressure unit conversion matters in hose selection
Different hose and fitting standards report working and burst pressure in different units: European catalogs typically use bar or MPa, SAE/API standards use PSI, and some diesel and instrumentation specifications use atmosphere or kgf/cm². When your system's working pressure is specified in one unit, an incorrect conversion to another can lead to selecting an unsuitable hose grade — either under-rated or unnecessarily over-specified. For example, 20 bar equals approximately 290 psi, not 30 psi — a unit-conversion error at this scale can result in a hose grade completely mismatched to your system.

Common pressure units in oil, gas & petrochemical industries
- Bar: common in European hydraulic and pneumatic hose catalogs; close to atmospheric pressure (1 bar ≈ 1 atm).
- PSI: standard unit in SAE, API and most US drilling and well-control equipment specifications.
- MPa: official SI unit, widely used in ISO standards and flange specifications (e.g. Code 61 = SAE 3000 psi ≈ 20.7 MPa).
- kgf/cm²: still used in some industrial valve and equipment specifications (particularly from Asian sources); approximately equal to 1 atmosphere.
