One of the most important factors in correct hose selection is the chemical compatibility of the inner tube with the conveyed fluid. Search your fluid name in the tool below to see its compatibility with the site's main hose families.

Results are based on the Balflex technical catalog fluid compatibility chart. For fluids not listed, or critical applications with specific temperature/concentration, always consult our technical team.

How to use this tool

Type the name of your conveyed fluid (e.g. oil, diesel, acid, sea water) in the field above. The tool shows compatibility with the site's three main hose families:

  • Group A — general braided & spiral hose: SAE 100R3 / R1AT / R2AT / R17 / DIN EN 857 1SC-2SC / SAE 100R5
  • Group B — multi-spiral high-pressure hose: SAE 100R12 / DIN EN 856 4SP-4SH / SAE 100R13 / R15
  • Group C — thermoplastic (non-conductive) hose: SAE 100R7 / R7 Non-Conductive

Result labels mean: Recommended (fully compatible), Recommended with restriction (temperature/concentration/exposure time should be checked), Not recommended (incompatible).

Why fluid compatibility matters

A hose's inner tube is made of an elastomer (synthetic rubber such as NBR, EPDM, CR or CSM). Each rubber compound reacts differently with different fluids: swelling, cracking, excessive softening or hardening, or loss of mechanical strength. Using an unsuitable hose for a given fluid can lead to leaks, process fluid contamination and premature failure — even if working pressure and hose size were selected correctly.

Additional notes on fluid-based hose selection

  • Temperature: chemical compatibility is typically reported at ambient temperature (~20°C); higher fluid temperature can significantly reduce compatibility.
  • Concentration: for acids and chemicals, concentration (e.g. 50% sulfuric acid vs. higher concentrations) can completely change the compatibility result.
  • Coupling and sealing: in addition to the hose tube material, the coupling's O-ring and sealing material must also be compatible with the fluid.
  • Critical applications: for corrosive fluids, strong acids, or fire-safety applications, always consult our technical team before purchasing.
